Established in 2006, the San Angelo Broadway Academy Youth Theatre is San Angelo’s only educational program offering performing arts education in theatre, dance, and vocal performance to children ages 3-18. As a 501 ( c)3 non profit, SABA has become a staple in the community, not only providing the highest level of education to over 700 students a year, but also providing Broadway style, family friendly musicals to over 9500 audience members annually.
As you can imagine, the average cost to produce a show can be quiet large, ranging from $22,000 to $75,000. Some may ask, “why does it cost that much?” There are many factors that go into putting up a show such as paying for the rights to produce the show, venue rental, building supplies to create the set, costuming an average of 70 kids per show, rental of backdrops, staffing, and so much more. While ticket prices can help defray the cost, it only covers a small fraction. SABA keeps ticket prices affordable so that any family in San Angelo and the surrounding areas may enjoy a night out at the theatre.
SABA also believes in providing an opportunity to learn to every single child who has the desire. In 2007, a scholarship fund was created to ensure that message rang loud. Annually SABA provides on average $5000 in scholarships to students studying dance, theatre, and or vocal performance. Several of these students are at-risk students, giving them an outlet after school, and creating an environment where they find a sense of belonging and can find successes in their abilities.
